Every purchase contains a complete set of cards-three copies of each card-except the Core Set, which contains one copy of each card, aside from a few key neutral cards. These will be rotated out of the card pool every four or five years in order to keep the buy-in for the game at a reasonable price. They are designed as a “cycle” of six packs at a time and there is sometimes a month or two gap between cycle releases. Chapter Packs are released once a month, adding twenty cards to the card pool each month players can use to modify their decks. Deluxe Boxes provide a large number of cards at once, likely for two Factions at a time, and are released sporadically. The Core Set features cards for every faction that will never be rotated out of the game, and will be followed by two kinds of releases: Deluxe Boxes and Chapter Pack cycles. I cannot emphasize how welcome of a change this is.įor those unfamiliar with how Fantasy Flight Games’ Living Card Game brand works, the Core Set is the first release for a new expandable card game. This means that FFG have put a lot of effort into creating a Core Set where the most iconic characters from A Song of Ice and Fire are represented, so that even as other, future versions of those characters may be released and then subsequently rotated out there will still always be a powerful version of Tyrion or Daenerys available to players of House Lannister or House Targaryen, etc. One of the best parts about the new edition of Thrones is that it’s first the Living Card Game (LCG) that Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) have released since they announced their new rotation policy at last year’s World Championships in Minnesota. If I had to pick a theme for the Core Set, it would be that characters matter. Today, I’ll begin examining what that meta-game is starting to look like, while touching a bit on how it differs from the first edition of the game.

However, with hundreds of copies being sold at GenCon 2015-with many having gone to some of the top Thrones players in the world who attended the National Championship in Indianapolis-and the release of the OCTGN module for the game, the first signs of a burgeoning meta have emerged. (Hereafter simply “Thrones.”) After all, at the time of this writing, the game hasn’t made its way to distributors for wide release.

Most mods can be found with some ingenuity on the discord channels below. It’s still early days for the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, Second Edition.

I recommend subscribing to the Tabletop Simulator reddit page at See reference links about backing up mods, etc. They are highly subject to change and DMCA takedown. There are duplicates in the list - I tried to use exact naming of mods because it can be tricky to get the exact one referenced amongst all those listed in Steam Workshop and it is helpful to know there are multiple flavors of mods with different features. What I ended up with is a somewhat curated list of boardgame mods on Workshop with known good working content as of 4/2020. There are literally thousands of mods, some sanctioned, some unsanctioned, some complete, some with working or not working external references that could change or break at any time.
